Andermatt have launched Rootiliser Potato Mist, a beneficial bacteria which helps gardeners grow more and bigger potatoes, with results proven by a 2023 project run with Tesco, WWF and Branstons.
Gardeners can simply spray onto chitting potatoes before planting.
How does it work? Rootiliser (Bacillus atropheus strain ABi05) is a beneficial bacteria that naturally occurs in the soil, and helps increase the potato’s root network.
But unlike many beneficial microbes, Rootiliser grows in soil temperatures down to 8°C, which makes it ideal for application to potato seeds and early season planting.
It is the development of the plant’s root structure which determines how much water and nutrition the potato plant can use as it grows through the year.
Potatoes are hungry plants, helping them to extract more nutrition from the soil around them helps improve both quality and quantity of yield.
And it’s success has been proven in the field, with a 2023 project run with Tesco, WWF and Branstons demonstrating that Andermatt beneficial bacteria improve the yield of potatoes.
Rootiliser Potato Mist provides this beneficial bacteria in an easy-to-use use form to allow hobby gardeners to also benefit from higher potato yields.
“Rootiliser Potato Mist is a great example of where Andermatt have taken technology from our Crop business and created something suited for people to help grow food in their garden or allotment” says Dr Andrew Brown Managing Director of Andermatt UK. “Last year’s project with Tesco and WWF demonstrated the ability to increase potato yield when using our beneficial bacteria. Rootiliser Potato Mist allows gardeners to also benefit from this farming project.”
Andermatt are a global leader in manufacturing biological technologies, pioneering biocontrol since 1988 when they developed the world’s first baculovirus – against maggots in apples, that is still widely used today.
